NGC 6946 is a face-on galaxy with a small and bright nucleus, whose location in the sky lies on the boundary between the constellation Cepheus and Cygnus. Located at a distance of about 22 million light years, it was once thought to be the part of Local Group of galaxies but now we knows it lies in some other group in the Virgo super cluster. The galaxy was discovered by William Herschel in the year 1798. At the time of discovery, Herschel believed it to be a gaseous nebula. The galaxy is known as the Fireworks Galaxy due to the number of supernova explosions occurred in the arms of this galaxy. In the past century, 8 supernovae have been recorded in this galaxy. More supernovae have been seen in NGC 6946 than in any other galaxy.
